At a University renowned for teaching excellence, faculty members are honoured on an annual basis with a number of distinguished teaching awards. For taking the student experience to the next level, Trent’s teachers have also been recognized provincially and nationally with the most prestigious teaching awards and honours.

 

2011-2012 Internal Teaching Award Recipients


SYMONS AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING

Professor Emeritus Tom Hutchinson, who teaches in the Environmental and Resource Studies Program, has been named the 2012 recipient of the Symons Award for Excellence in Teaching. In receiving this award, Professor Hutchinson is recognized for the unique educational opportunities he has provided in the study, observation and practice of sustainable agriculture. Professor Hutchinson is also recognized for the exemplary concern he exhibits in many ways, including his enthusiasm about his students, about their work and their research, and through his generosity of granting students access to his farm property to complete their research and xperiments. Professor Hutchinson will receive his framed award at the spring Convocation.

AWARD FOR EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP AND INNOVATION
 

Professor Jocelyn Williams, an Assistant Professor in the Anthropology Department, has been named the 2012 recipient of the Award for Educational Leadership and Innovation. In receiving this award, Professor Williams is recognized for the distinctive contribution she has made to both the undergraduate and graduate Anthropology programs at Trent, the impact of her innovative methods of instruction, and her effective communication with students. Her commitment to teaching is further reflected in the receipt of grants for teaching innovations, active participation in professional development opportunities, and the sharing of pedagogical strategies with faculty colleagues both within her department and within the broader instructional community.

EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING ASSISTANCE AWARD
 

Mr. Evan Senkiw, a graduate student teaching assistant for the Politics Department, has been named the 2012 recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Assistance Award. In receiving this award, Mr. Senkiw is recognized as a skilled and passionate teaching assistant, one who guides his students in learning difficult concepts and helps his students build self confidence within the classroom and in the academic work that they complete. CUPE AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN PART-TIME TEACHING

Mr. Jose Miguel Garcia Ramirez, a course instructor in the Modern Languages and Literatures Department has been named the 2012 recipient for the CUPE 3908-1 Award for Excellence in Teaching. In receiving this award, Mr. Garcia Ramirez is recognized as an outstanding teacher and educator who plays a major role in his students' understanding of the content, contextualization of class material and appreciation of the Spanish culture and language.
