The School of Graduate Studies uses an on-line application form that may be used to apply to any of the graduate programs at Trent University, except the Trent-Queen's graduate program. To apply to one of the Trent-Queen's graduate programs, please access the application through the Trent-Queen's webpage.
A student will be able to make up to 2 program choices for the same application fee. Some programs require a student to indicate an area of specialization. A student may choose more than one area if their interests encompass more than one area of study (up to a maximum of three).
Please read the complete application instructions before completing the on-line application. Before mailing in the required documents, please use the application checklist to ensure a complete application. If you have any questions, please contact the program office before completing the application.
Application Instructions and Required Documentation for all Graduate programs
All applicants are responsible for collecting and submitting all required documents to The School of Graduate Studies by the application deadline
* Please refrain from stapling documents.
Required documents include:
1. Official transcripts - submit one certified copy for all post secondary institutions you have attended. In order to be considered official, transcripts must be received in envelopes sealed by the issuing institution, or received from the Ontario Universities' Application Centre. Trent students do not need to order transcripts. The School of Graduate Studies will obtain your records for your application free of charge.
2. Two letters of reference - academic references are preferred; however, professional references will be accepted. Have referees fill out the required template in additional to any letters submitted on the applications behalf. Referee Template
3. A plan of study- typically 1-2 pages, outlining applicant's objectives in a graduate program. Any specific research interests (if known), relevant experiences, and/or career aspirations can be included. If a potential supervisor has been discussed, please identify this in your plan of study. Plan of Study
4 . A writing sample - submit a sample of your writing of about 20 pages or less. Writing samples must be submitted electronically by emailing graduate@trentu.ca. Preferred format is PDF. Please indicate in the subject line of your email: student name and program choice. Hard copies will not be accepted.
Choose your best writing sample, but also something that you think will interest the program to which you are applying. Writing Samples are required for all programs except the Applied Modelling and Quantitative Methods M.Sc./M.A. and the Materials Science M.Sc./Ph.D. programs. For these programs, a detailed plan of study including research interests is sufficient.
Note about Writing Samples: Good choices for writing samples include: an undergraduate essay, lab report, research report, journal article, a chapter from a masters thesis, or a published article.
5. Proof of Citizenship (ie. copy of passport or birth certificate)
6. Proof of English Language proficiency for those applicants whose first language is not English.

Application for Financial Support
Students are encouraged to apply early for external scholarships (i.e. OGS, NSERC, SSHRC) through their home universities. Please note the deadlines to apply for external scholarships are typically in early October of the year prior to your admission date. All applicants are automatically considered for teaching assistantships, research fellowships and/or internal scholarships. Trent provides a competitive financial package to all graduate students accepted into programs. Graduate students with extraordinary financial need above the standard financial support package may apply for a Trent University Bursary based on demonstrated financial need.
Admission Process
All applications will be initially examined and evaluated by the appropriate programs. All supporting documents (transcripts, letters of reference, etc.) must be received before any application can receive formal consideration. A program's recommendations for admission will be forwarded to The School of Graduate Studies. The School of Graduate Studies will officially notify each applicant of the action taken on his or her application. All admission decisions are final; there is no appeal of admission decisions.
Official letters of acceptance are only for the academic year indicated. Successful applicants must reply in writing indicating whether or not they accept the offer of admission. Acceptance of an offer of admission will normally be required within four weeks of the date of the offer letter. If the applicant is unable to commence studies in the term agreed upon, the programs reserve the right to reconsider their acceptance.
English Proficiency Requirements
Proficiency in English usage, both written and oral, is essential to pursue graduate studies at Trent University. Applicants whose primary language is not English and who completed their previous university education in a language other than English, must provide proof of proficiency in English before admission using one of the tests listed below.
Where the language of instruction in the previous university education has been English, the Committee on Graduate Studies is prepared to consider alternate proof of English language proficiency. Applicants who studied at a university in Bangladesh, India, Nigeria or Pakistan are not eligible for this exception and must provide proof of English language proficiency using one of the tests listed below.
The following tests are acceptable forms of proof of English language proficiency:
- TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) A minimum score of 580 PBT, 237 CBT with a minimum TWE score of 4.5 or 93 iBT with a minimum score of 22 in both speaking and writing is required.; (Educational Testing Service, Princeton, New Jersey 08540, U.S.A.)
- CAEL (Canadian Academic English Language Test) – alternate test only for applicants who do not have access to TOEFL (Carleton University, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada K1S 5B6). The minimum acceptable score is 60, with at least 60 in Writing Proficiency.
- MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery). The minimum acceptable score is 85, with no part below 80.
- IELTS (International English language Testing Services). The minimum acceptance score is 6.5, with no band below 6.0.
Applicants must make their own arrangements for taking language tests and having the results sent to the University in time to meet its application deadline by contacting the centre in their locale or by writing to one of the above.
Graduate Record Examinations
The graduate record examination (GRE) is not required for an application to Trent University. Trent's Psychology M.A./M.Sc. highly recommends applicants to write both the subject and general GRE for consideration into this program. Applicants for admission whose academic credentials are difficult to assess may be asked to take the Graduate Record Examination administered by the Educational Testing Service, Princeton, NJ, 08540, USA. Students are expected to make their own arrangements and will bear the cost of taking the Graduate Record Examinations.
Qualifying Courses
Applicants who meet the minimum average for admission but whose curriculum background is not sufficient for direct entry into a graduate program may be advised to undertake qualifying courses. Successful completion of these courses as recommended by the program concerned will permit the student to compete for admission on an equal basis with other applicants. Subsequent admission to a graduate program is not, however, guaranteed.
Special Admissions
Applicants who demonstrate the ability to succeed in a graduate program but do not meet the published minimum academic requirements due to exceptional circumstances may qualify for special admission. Determination of the applicant's suitability to the program will be made by the program admissions committee and program director. If special admission is deemed appropriate, the program director will submit a recommendation to the Dean of Graduate Studies for approval.
Transfer of Credit
Graduate courses completed at another institution may be accepted in partial fulfillment of Trent's degree requirements. Credit for such work will be determined by the Committee on Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the program concerned. This recommendation must be supported by a statement regarding the appropriateness of the course(s) to the individual's particular degree program at Trent. In addition, the grade(s) earned in the course(s) must meet the equivalent minimum grade required of all graduate students at Trent. Courses considered for credit normally must have been taken within five years of the date of admission into a graduate program at Trent.
Ontario Visiting Graduate Students (OVGS)
Trent Graduate students wanting to take a course at another Ontario university (while remaining a registered student at Trent), should apply using the Ontario Visiting Graduate Student Application Form. Along with this form, provide an outline and details for the course. Students must be formally approved by their home Program Director and their Supervisor before submission to The School of Graduate Studies at Trent.
Students enrolled in a graduate program at another Ontario University wishing to take a graduate course at Trent University as a visiting graduate student should apply using the Ontario Visiting Graduate Student Application Form. These students should first contact The School of Graduate Studies at their home institution for more information on this process.
